Get the Job You Want

The most successful approach

Nobody wants to get stuck in the wrong job. Nobody wants to blow getting the job they really want. And yet, this happens to so many people. Is there a fundamental way to change all of this? Is there an approach that will guide you directly to the job you want, and give you a huge advantage in getting it?

You bet you. And it may surprise you what it is! It involves the racing a certain phrase from your mind. It involves stopping herself from saying this oh-so-common sentence. And the sentence is: "I need to get a job." In so many cases, this sentence can become a life sentence. And I don't mean that in the good way. It is a huge block.

Why is that the wrong approach?

First of all, a sense of desperation is never good for fulfilling employment prospects. People will take the first job that comes along, and that's when they get stuck. Now I understand that sometimes it's needed on a temporary basis. I'm not judging, I'm simply encouraging you to shoot a lot higher.

The second problem with the "I need to get a job" approach is that it may prevent you from being an attractive prospect. This is a huge challenge, which I will illustrate with the following true story.

A cautionary tale of job applicants who didn't get it.

I recently posted a job opening for something involved with the business I run. Some people sent me their resumes. They didn't include a cover letter, they didn't start off with "dear Seth," or anything personal at all. Worst of all, it was clear to me that they were sending their resumes via e-mail to many potential employers. But that wasn't the worst response I got. That grand prize went to the person who wrote back, "How much do you pay?"

As an employer, I can't tell you how much that response turned me off. Actually, all of those responses did not accrue to the credit of the people who sent them. This may sound cruel, but as an employer, I could care less how much you need a job. Your needing a job is not my problem. My problem is finding a devoted person to do the things I am willing to pay to have done.

In other words, the job applicant who tries to get me to hire them based on how much they need the job, or based on how much it pays, does not seem to me to be an employee that will excel. A job applicant who doesn't take the time to write me a note, or even learn my name, is someone who has the "I need to get a job," approach. It is a turnoff, and I caution all potential employers to watch out for this type of person.

How to get the right job and love it!

What gets me excited? When someone says to me, "I love what you are doing, and I'd love to be a part of it." Very often, the discussion of salary happens much later in the conversation. And when I see an applicant who has taken the time to see what they can do to help my business succeed, I am much more open to being generous with salary. After all, I know I will be getting what I am paying for.

So this is the magical approach that will cure both of the problems we started with. It is straightforward, positive and powerful. You just need to follow the following approach and you will succeed in record time:

Find your passion, find an employer who shares it, and research how you can help them succeed even more.

When you do this, you will choose to apply to places that are in line with what you love doing. Secondly, by taking the time to prepare your self, you will show them your seriousness. When you come in with great ideas for them, they will be amazingly pleased.

It's all there in the Bible, believe it or not.

Do you want proof from the Bible? Learn the story of Joseph and Pharaoh in Egypt. When Pharaoh had those bad dreams about the thin cows eating the fat cows, Joseph did more than simply interpret the dreams. He suggested a major change in Egypt's economic policy to protect the country from the famine. Who do you think got the job to implement it?

Joseph, of course.

Let that be a lesson to you. Never say, "I need to get a job." Always say, "I love what you do in your business, and I was thinking of the following things that will help..". Always be Joseph going in to meet Pharaoh!
